Tom R. Norris, MD - San Francisco Shoulder and Elbow Surgery

Dr. Norris has been with the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow, and Hand Clinic since 1978.  He has been an influential member of the San Francisco Bay Area medical community, as well as the national and international shoulder and elbow reconstructive communities, since the 1970s.  Originally from Oklahoma and raised in Texas, Dr. Norris went to high school at Culver Military Academy and college at Princeton University.  He received his medical degree from Columbia-Presbyterian, College of Physicians and Surgeons, did his internship at SF General Hospital, and his Orthopaedic Residency at the NY Orthopaedic Hospital.  He then completed a year fellowship in hand surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and 6 months of microvascular surgery in California. He returned to NY for a Fellowship in the Shoulder and Elbow with Charles S. Neer II, MD, a pioneer of the subspecialty.  In addition to his practice, Dr. Norris has served on the Committee for Musculoskeletal Specialities and the Publications Committee the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons(AAOS). He edited the first and second editions of the Orthopaedic Knowledge Update for the Shoulder and Elbow. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and a founding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES).

He has published numerous books, articles, and instructional courses and videos in peer-reviewed journals, serving as editor for several of them as well.  His area of research focus is in total shoulder replacements, including U.S. contributions for the evolving design of the “reverse” total shoulder replacement.  He also enjoys teaching shoulder and elbow surgery as co-director of the San Francisco Shoulder Fellowship.
